Bay State Council Mtg on 10/11/06
Friday, October 13, 2006
The Bay State Council of Divers met to discuss the Gloucester Dive flag ordinance. For those who don't know, ordinance requires all divers to carry a dive flag, plus divers are required to maintain a 25 foot avoidance zone from lobster traps/trap lines.

So far an attorney has been hired, and with that funds must be raised to pay him. The council stressed that they need the dive community's help in raising these funds. More info coming soon!

The next meeting between the council and the dive clubs will be held on October 25th. All divers are encouraged to attend (there were only about 30 at this meeting)

If you would like to donate, you can send a check to:

Bay State Council of Divers c/o South Shore Neptune's
P.O. Box 518
Quincy, Mass. 02169

Mass Diving has also set up a portion of their webite store for donations if you would like to donate via credit card.

Good and Bad Invasive Species Stories
Wednesday, October 11, 2006

First the good news: Mussels evolve quickly to defend against invasive crabs It looks like New England Mussels are evolving a harder shell to combat the increased attacks of invasive crabs. What's interesting is that this has occurred in about 15 years - rather than thousands of years that evolution usually takes

and the bad: Invasive sea squirts persist on Georges Bank Monitoring by Woods Hole has found that the invasive Tunicates (More info) have thrived. "The area of seabed covered by the colonies has doubled at 75 percent of the sites we observed in both 2005 and 2006"

Thursday, October 05, 2006
It's that time of year again! At the November General meeting we will be taking nominations for the 2007 officer positions. ANYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO RUN FOR ANY POSITIONS! We are looking for candidates for all positions. Some officers may be running again, but don't let that stop you from running - we'd love to have elections with multiple candidates.

If you have some ideas for the club, or you want to see something happen, become an officer. Look for officer duty descriptions on the website, or newsletter, or email and officer
