Danielle Robbins, Beach Master Canoe Beach 2007

YOU made a difference!

by Alicia Lenci

The 2000 Neadc cleanup at Forty-steps, my first as environmental liaison for the club, caught the attention of NEU's Ted Maney.

In 2001, Ted and NEU invited the Neadc to host a beach/underwater cleanup in conjunction with their annual open house events at Canoe beach.  Each year since we have seen a reduction in the amount of marine debris collected at this site, especially underwater.  Also, since 2001, there has been more awareness and more participants at the town level to cleanup the beach throughout the year.

Neadc may not have to host this event next year at Canoe Beach.

No Underwater Trash……is a good thing!

THANK YOU to all participants this year and in the past.  You made a difference!

48 people participated and 153 lbs of trash was removed.  Most was collected was from Canoe beach and the other coves and beaches around East point, NEU property.  (Forty-steps trail was closed due to its reconstruction).   Most of the litter was plastic caps/lids, rope, food wrappers and cigarette butts.  This type of litter ends up on our beaches not from the beach goers, but from the urban environment.  In heavy rains, especially in old cities like our own, sewer overflow flush litter out to waterways not going through a filtration system and end up on our beaches.   So when you put that cigarette butt out on the sidewalk, toss the soda bottle top or food wrapper on the sidewalk or roadway they most likely end up on our beaches.    Reduce Reuse Recycle!

Special thanks to Beach Masters, Danielle Robbins, Uma Mirani, and Maryhelen Shuman-Groh.   From start to finish, their help assisting volunteers through the entire process and even to the final disposal of debris to the dumpster was completely invaluable to me.  THANK YOU.

Do you want to host your own data collection cleanup?

All types are needed to participate in this world wide effort.  Shoreline/Beach, Underwater, River/stream/tributary and Lake.
